It's located in a small outside food market. Didn't try any of the other spot but man this one was delicious. BBQ is exactly what you want - juicy, tender, and flavorful. Plain and simple.

Wow! What a flavorful mouthful. We enjoyed the mixed lean/fat brisket (yummy).... pulled pork (tasty) and a cheddar/jalapeño sausage link (beautify done). For sides, the mac and cheese kicked my taste buds with a bit of spice. The beans were tasty and the cole slaw was creamy and crisp. The portion sizes were generous.... with enough left over to enjoy a bit for lunch tomorrow. I have only the highest culinary complements for Matt's BBQ.

We were in search of somewhere to go on New Year's Eve. After some deliberation we decided to visit the food trucks on Mississippi. Matt's was one of a few open places. We walked up to the cool "shack-like" food cart and were instructed to order at the kiosk. They had a few things left so we settled on pulled pork and potato salad. It also came with pickled cucumber and onion. All in all, the food hit the spot. It isn't the best BBQ I've ever had but it is solidly a "good choice". Their peach mustard BBQ sauce was particularly good. Definitely recommend if you're out there.

Located in the Mississippi food truck pod, Matt's BBQ is a great spot to grab some delicious barbecue and share it over a beer with friends. I ordered the ribs and brisket, which were incredibly tender with just the right smoky flavor. It's the kind of BBQ you can tell was done with care. When you order, you'll enter your phone number and get a pickup alert--super convenient. When you pick up your order, make sure to grab a variety of their sauces to try, and don't skip the coleslaw--it's fresh and crunchy and the perfect side to balance out the rich meats. Matt's is worth visiting if you're in the mood for a good BBQ!

Matt's BBQ was excellent. I visited this place with the barbecue food bloggers, the Barbecue Bros. Here's their write-up: https://barbecuebros.co/2024/09/30/matts-bbq-is-an-example-of-legit-texas-barbecue-in-portland/ They're barbecue experts. Matt's BBQ was listed as one of the best places outside of Texas to get Texas-style barbecue per an August 28, 2024 article by Daniel Vaughn of Texas Monthly. Vaughn ate at 149 barbecue joints in 37 states. Matt's BBQ made his list of 53 best: https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/the-united-states-of-texas-barbecue/ Matt's BBQ isn't a restaurant, but a food truck / food cart located in the Prost! Marketplace "food cart pod" in the Boise neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The pod is akin to a food truck park. It's named Prost! because of the German pub named Prost! that anchors the property. When we arrived around 2pm on a Friday, the pod was fairly busy, but not crowded. Our group of eight was able to find an open picnic table easily. We street-parked for free around the corner on N Mason St. Here's what we ordered: Meat * Original Sausage x2 ($12.00; $6.00 per link) * Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage x2 ($12.00; $6.00 per link) * Sliced Brisket 1/2 lb x4 ($64.00; $16.00 per 1/2 lb) * Pork Spare Ribs 1 lb x2 ($32.00; $16.00 per lb) Sides * Queso Mac and Cheese 1/2 pint ($4.75) * Pickled Cukes and Red Onions 1/2 pint ($1.50) * 10 thick slices of Dos Hermanos Potato Bread ($5.00) Sauces (free, self-serve) * Cherry Chipotle * Peach Mustard * Spicy Mustard * Hog Vinegar Everything was equally delicious. In general, I thought the meats were high quality and the barbecue well executed. The flavor and texture of the brisket, ribs, and sausages were terrific. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the brisket. It had a perfect smoke ring with ideal amounts of lean and fatty (for me). The ribs were a close second. They were meaty, appetizing, and tender. Contrary to what one of my friends thought, I found both the brisket and ribs to be nicely seasoned and flavorful. No sauce needed. However, all of the sauces were quite good. The cherry chipotle and peach mustard were unique, and they worked. That said, the spicy mustard and hog vinegar sauces were my favorites. The sausages were packed with flavor. The jalapeno cheddar sausage was exceptionally rich. The sides were solid as well. Another one of my friends loved the pickles and I agree - they had wonderful crunch and taste. Generous portions all around too. If anything was more on the ordinary side, it was the mac and cheese (but it wasn't bad). Service was good. We didn't have to wait long to pick up our large order. Notable items we didn't try included their Pulled Pork ($12.00 per 1/2 lb) and weekend specials, available Saturday and Sunday only: Beef Ribs ($26 per lb), Brisket Burnt Ends ($16.00 per 1/2 lb), and Armadillo Eggs ($7.50 each). The latter are jalapeno poppers wrapped in sausage meat and smoked. Matt's BBQ has been in this location since 2015. Their website says all their meats "are cooked for the day on an offset smoker using oak wood." https://mattsbbqpdx.com/

WHEN: Fri @5pm While there is plenty of seating at this food hall, not many are in the shade, so those get snagged up quick! What's convenient is there is a tablet you can place your order from, and here's what 3 adults shared: Our order comes with pickles and warm dip bbq sauce. PORK SPARE RIBS (1 lb) - $16 Not my favorite since I'm not a fan of dry surfaces but the flavor is all there. SLICED BRISKET (1/2 lb) - $16 Wow so tender! Best brisket ever! Even better when you dip it in the BBQ sauce. Man, I am impressed. ORIGINAL SAUSAGE (1) - $6 I appreciate it already cut into section which makes it easier to share. Your standard sausage link with a bit of kick to it. I liked it. PORK BELLY BURNT ENDS (1/2 lb) - $16 Rich and tender enough for me. Juicy and rich. Okay fine, it's fatty, I said what I said. QUESO MAC AND CHEESE - $4.75 When you receive this after it's served, it looks like a pool of runny yellow liquids. Don't worry that cheese sauce will l thicken, and just might become the best Mac n cheese you've ever had! Price is decent too for the amount! How did we manage to still have leftovers? I guess we weren't hungry, which proves more that this place serves good BBQ!

Drinks: -N/A Food: - The jalapeño cheddar sausage is a must get. Let me put it this way: it's a snappy gushing cheesy glizzy. I mean what more do ya want? It's also not spicy, granted my tolerance for spice is high, but I honestly don't think anyone would have an issue with the spice level here, it's more for the flavor - The sliced brisket is textbook, juicy and flavorful. This is a good pick - The coleslaw was okay, it's more of a vinegar based tangy coleslaw so if you're expecting a rich mayo based coleslaw then this is not for you. This is acidic and is meant to balance out the fattiness of all the meat - The burnt ends are a must get. The fattiness of the pork belly is addicting and surprisingly didn't tire me out or made the meal feel heavy - The mac n cheese was okay. I liked it, but it didn't really blow my mind or anything Ambience: - This is a food truck next to the Prost German beer pub - The vibe of the food truck/Prost situation is a great setup for a nice sunny day. There's picnic style benches as seating options and the space is covered - There's a nice dedicated sauce station to try their sauces and allows you to control the amount of sauce you want which I liked a lot Overall: The vibe of this place and the uniqueness of it makes it a great hangout spot or even a good date spot. I definitely plan on returning and when anyone from out of town asks me for a recommendation for places to eat, this place is towards the top of my list (it's literally food carts, and beer what's more Portland than that). The sides left a great deal to be desired, but that is made up for by the vibes and the meat. If I had to rank the meats that I tried, I'd put it in the following order: 1. Burnt Ends (fatty but doesn't make you feel bloated) 2. Sliced Brisket (juicy and has that classic brisket flavor) 3. Pork Spare Ribs (Doesn't quite fall off the bone, but it is a very pleasant eating experience and has a good bite to it) 4. Chopped Brisket (kind of dry, kind of touch to chew. It was alright)
